Stewart Burns, Historian

Activist historian Stewart Burns is the only major King biographer who has walked the talk, hiked the hill—many years of nonviolent activism and organizing for justice and peace that has enlightened and been enlightened by thirty years studying Dr. King’s life, leadership, and legacy. From attending the 1963 March on Washington and forming a high school civil rights committee, to organizing anti-Vietnam War protests and resisting the draft, to protesting nuclear power and first-strike nuclear weapons, to fostering interracial communication at Stanford, Williams, and other colleges, he has devoted his life to teaching and practicing Kingian “soul force.” Over the past several years he has been working on an significantly expanded second edition of his biography of Martin Luther King Jr., To the Mountaintop (1st ed. 2004), which is soon to appear.
